What is Ekklesia?
Ekklesia is a monthly gathering of Denton area college students who are committed to following Christ. It is the assembling of Christian students in prayer and worship to God. We come from different ministries, churches and traditions united by our common belief in the one true triune God of the scriptures, as expressed in the historic Christian creeds.
Praying through the Day
Students gather throughout the day in a prayer room offering unceasing prayer for the kingdom of God to break into the life of the campus through His people. Each month watching and listening students discern the cries for the kingdom on their campuses and lift up their prayers to the Lord.
Throughout the day students are encouraged to interact by adding prayer requests and affirming other requests. During this day we are encouraged to fast and pray being mindful of our dependence on God and the cultivation of our hearts for His mission.
Evening Worship Vespers
In the evening, we gather together in the historic tradition of Vespers, an evening prayer and worship assembly. In this gathering we sing and pray together focusing on the themes of our unity in Christ and His mission to redeem the world. The worship, prayer, and public reading of scripture is led by various leaders of Christian campus ministries, and takes place in the UNT Lyceum on the 1st Tuesday night of each month.
Why Ekklesia?
The 21st century has brought us widespread religious pluralism where undefined spiritualities rule hearts through a market of religious goods. In this age, the chosen people of the one true God, the Church, are divided into denominations and independent congregations and are viewed as separate competing religions among the remaining spiritual choices in a global community.
Rather than giving in to the vain spiritual rules of the culture, we listen to the prayer of our Savior King and God, Jesus Christ, in his prayer for his disciples on the eve of his betrayal and passion:
“The glory which You have given me I have given them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them, and you in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved me.” -John 17:22-23
The privileged place that the Church used to hold in society has been removed and the absence of her influence can hardly be seen more clearly than on the college campuses in Denton and across the nation.
We recognize that the spiritual wanderers are not attracted to our organizations and programs but can only be attracted to the beauty of God’s people displaying the glory given them by Christ in loving unity that celebrates diversity.
And this kind of mission can only be born out of humble prayer and authentic worship to the One True God perfecting us and sending us.
