Though it is more than a few months after our Spring Break experiences serving the poor and marginalized, we feel that it best to leave this post up as a point of application to those who may be looking for a place to serve.

On our Urban Experience trips we all learned that that kind of proximity to the needy generates opportunities for personal growth…a very unexpected but welcome side effect. We rightly felt more “Christ-like” while pouring ourselves out by not taking a break over Spring break. Whether you went on an Urban Experience trip or not, why not consider how you might be a part of what God is doing among the poor and marginalized where you live. Jeff mentioned on at the Urbex Celebration that mission always happens by subtraction, not addition…meaning you may need to consider what you might need to give up in order to be poured out. As a starting point, here are some opportunities we know of that you can serve in denton.

VILLAGE EAST APARTMENTS

Directly next to Denton Bible is an apartment complex with a host of needs. There you will find poverty, troubled homes, and at risk youth. There are several opportunities to serve through ongoing ministry efforts:

Village East Boys Club

Thursdays @ 6:30

Reaches boys ranging in age from 3rd grade – high school

Email Ross@collegelife.org for more info

Kids Club

Fridays @ 4

Email Martha Mercer at mercer.martha@gmail.com

Tutoring

Mondays @ 3:45

Serving the kids of Village East by helping them excel in school while sharing Christ

Email Carmie Duncan at carmeliteduncan@gmail.com

CEMENT CITY APARTMENTS

Cement City is the nickname of the area of denton between North Texas Drive and Bonnie Brae, just west of campus. Like Village East, this area has a host of needs. There is an ongoing ministry to the kids of this community through the youth ministry of Lifeline Bible Fellowship, a church plant of Denton Bible. Doug Alcala lives, along with a few others, in this community to know and serve their neighbors. There are ongoing activities that you could plug in to. Contact Doug for more info at mes_137@yahoo.com

SEEDS OF CHANGE

Seeds of Change is a ministry to the homeless of Denton through offering meals, mostly at times when meals at other ministries are not available. Participants in this ministry are also encouraged to get involved in the lives of the homeless of Denton. For a more comprehensive explanation of the vision and how to get involved, contact Dustin Aguilar at sheddyguy@yahoo.com

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS

More than 20,000 Denton and Wise County public school students are in at-risk situations for failure and of dropping out of school. With the help of Communities in Schools of North Texas (CISNT), part of the nation’s largest dropout prevention network, many will beat the odds this year and stay in school. CISNT, a program administered by the Texas Education Agency(TEA), is part of an innovative national approach established to combat the dropout problem.

Opportunities are available to serve as tutors and/or mentors in local Denton schools. For more information visit their WEBSITE

VISION MINISTRIES

Vision ministers to others by going out into the communities within our city to reach people where they are. We have clothing giveaway where we go out to an apartment complex or mobile home park and knock on the doors. We let the people know that we are giving away clothes. While the adults are looking through the clothes, we gather the children and tell them a bible story. It is so wonderful to see their eyes light up when they hear about Jesus and what he did for them. We also hold bible clubs each week at different locations.

Opportunities range from helping out in the warehouse, distributing goods to various communities around Denton, and much more. For those interested, please visit their WEBSITE

S.W.E.A.T. TEAMS

The SWEAT Teams exist to serve those who are disabled, those who are sick, and those affected by natural disasters – with physical labor. We serve those who suffer from major financial problems and need our help just to get their homes livable. They exist as an outreach (first) to those outside of our own church. Our greatest need is the volunteer who is willing to serve those less fortunate. Our goal is to share the Gospel of Christ, and to convince the church of its obligation to the poor.

For more information on how to serve, visit their WEBSITE

Also, our very own Missional Director, Kevn Bohiln has a familial link to this ministry… Both of his parents work for the organization.

Mission

Probe’s mission is to present the Gospel to communities, nationally and internationally, by providing life-long opportunities to integrate faith and learning through balanced, biblically based scholarship, training people to love God by renewing their minds and equipping the Church to engage the world for Christ.

Ministry Outreaches

• National and international youth and adult Mind Games Conferences attended by more than 10,000 participants since its inception.

• Probe Radio Program, heard on over 600 stations daily, reaching 1 million people each week.

• Probe staff members are interviewed regularly on national and international radio networks with listening audiences in the millions.

• Web site resource with 1500+ articles and biblical perspective, including the ability to hear the Probe Radio program through real-time streaming or podcast.

• Ongoing research to address today’s issues through honest and respected Christian scholarship.

Probe’s History

Probe Ministries was founded in 1973 by James F. Williams Jr. and Jon Buell, who sought to form a ministry that would bridge the frontier between the agonizing questions man asks and the profound answers the Gospel offers. Beginning with the vision and no staff, Probe has grown today to form a working unit of 11 scholars and 4 support staff. As the organization has served Christ faithfully for 35 years, Probe now stands ready to dramatically expand its ministry for Christ the next 35 years.
